Overview
- Function - Ball valves are simple and inexpensive valves that are quickly and easily operated. Good ball valves allow unrestricted flow when fully open.
- Explanation - Ball valves contain a ball with a hole through the centre. A lever turns the ball 90º to control flow.
- Typical Use - General purpose use, preferably where flow is either fully on or fully off.
- Cautions - Avoid long straight upstream pipework which may suffer from water-hammer if a ball valve is shut off too quickly. A closed ball valve holds a small amount of fluid, so do not use with fluids that could solidify, freeze or deteriorate whilst contained inside the valve.
